Evaluating a Prototype Log Sorting System for Use in Pine Sawmills

The purpose of the project is to develop a system to automatically assess sawlogquality using conventional optical log scanning equipment. A series of studies was conducted in cooperation with SCA Timber, REMA Control, and SCA's Munksund Sawmill. The report deals with the second of these studies conducted at the Munksund sawmill to test the relationship between log characteristics and lumber quality, the computer algorithms developed to describe log geometry, and the log quality sorting system. A total of 600 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) logs were scanned after debarking using the REMA scanner installed in the sorting station at the Munksund sawmill.
