The scope of the seminar was to give a theoretical breakthrough on converter steelmaking, its chemistry and dynamics. The main lecturer, Dr. Amit Chatterjee presented fluid dynamics, heat generation, mass transfer, lance design and blowing dynamics in top blown converters. Prof. Lauri Holappa presented a historical perspective on converter metallurgy, steelmaking methods before and after Bessemer until current processes and potential future development. Assoc. prof. Heikki Jalkanen contributed with thermodynamic modelling of reactions in metal bath and slag phase during the oxygen blowing. The two day seminar with contributions and lively discussions gave a uniquely comprehensive and profound exploration to converter metallurgy for all the 36 participants of whom 20 were from outside the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT).
