Fort Lewis is located in Pierce and Thurston Counties, Washington, on the easternshore of the southern part of Puget Sound. Groundwater and soil sampling at the Logistics Center has shown volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals contamination of the unconfined aquifer beneath and northwest (downgradient) of the Logistics Center. The presence of VOCs in soils at the Logistics Center overlying the unconfined aquifer presents the additional exposure potential if migration of these contaminants through the soil into the aquifer occurs. If the disconnected but functional private wells are used for drinking, bathing, and cooking water, potential exposure could occur through ingestion, dermal absorption, and inhalation.
