The MacGillis and Gibbs (M&G) Company and the Bell Lumber and Pole (BL&P) Companycurrently operate separate, but adjacent, wood treating facilities in New Brighton, Minnesota. The surficial aquifer under the MG/BLP site is contaminated with organic chemicals such as pentachlorophenol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and metals such as arsenic and chromium. Residents in the immediate vicinity of the site who have ingested/currently ingest water from private wells that take water from the surficial aquifer may have been/be exposed to these contaminants. Based on the information and data reviewed, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) concludes that the chemical contamination attributable to MG/BLP site poses an indeterminate public health hazard.
