A cooperative research project by the Gas Research Institute and Kerr-McGee Corporation was executed on the Knight-Strong No. 2 well located in the Carthage (CV) Field. The program, which was implemented in 1992, focused on improving the understanding of pay identification and hydraulic fracturing in the Upper Cotton Valley (UCV) Sands. An expanded logging program was implemented to aid in evaluating reservoir properties and in-situ stresses; in-situ stress tests were performed to help in the development of a 'calibrated' stress profile used in fracture modeling; and pertinent fracture treating data were acquired on two treatments to evaluate current treatment design practices, estimate the achieved fracture dimensions, and confirm the developed stress relationship. Results of analyses indicated that (1) formation evaluation techniques successfully differentiated between gas productive and water zones; (2) log-derived stresses, when corrected for gas effects, were in excellent agreement with the measured values; and (3) designed fracture treatments for both the lower and upper intervals in the Knight-Strong No. 2 well were successful in achieving the desired goals with respect to height confinement and penetration.
