Health Promotion for the Elderly Project (PROMESA). Promocion para Mejorar la Salud del Anciano Public/Private Partnership

The project had as its major goal the development of a collaborative health promotion model program in eight remote areas of the municipality of Cidra. To accomplish this mission, the project established two parallel components: (1) the provision of health evaluations, referrals and medical services, for isolated frail elderly, via a specially equipped medical mobile unit, and (2) the development of self-help groups in the areas of health, education and rural employment opportunities. The mobile unit assisted the professional health team(doctor, nurse and health educators) to complete a target of 1,000 health evaluations. The project team also developed self-help groups to have literacy classes which taught older persons, ages 60 to 95, to read and write, do handicrafts, twenty two diabetics attended an educational elder camp and a group of older men constructed the facilities for a floral and vegetables nursery.
