The goals of the program were to develop methods of measuring wear in the four-ball wear tester using lubricants in fully flooded, vapor phase with condensation and vapor phase procedures with a variety of lubricant types. The use of ceramic discs as a substitute for balls in the friction dynamometer was also developed in the program. These studies show that changes in bearing systems from steel-on-steel to steel-on-ceramic can be made without changing the lubricant-additive systems now used in natural gas fired engines. The studies also showed that vapor phase lubrication could be substituted for liquid lubricants without sacrifice in performance in the four-ball wear tester.
