Evaluation of In-Lake Enclosures for Increasing Short-Term Survival of StockedMuskellunge

Low short-term survival (1-2 months) of stocked muskellunge (Esox masquinongy) isa major management problem. Poor survival has been attributed to various stressors and to predation following stocking. In this study, conducted in northwestern Wisconsin in 1988-90, we tested the hypothesis that short-term survival would be improved for muskellunge fingerlings held at low densities in predator-free in-lake enclosures prior to release.
