Replacement and rehabilitation of corrosion defects in the approximately 400,000miles of high-pressure transmission and gathering line pipe result in substantial annual costs to the industry. Repair of dent damage due to third-party construction equipment, the most prevalent type of incident, adds significantly to the cost. A multifaceted program was devised which included the development of a repair analysis model, development of mechanical data for glass/resin composite materials for a variety of environmental conditions, full-scale laboratory testing of reinforced pipe, finite element modeling to correlate the analytical model with the experimental results, and field installations of composite repairs to quantify environmental degradation. Full-scale laboratory pipe tests demonstrated that composite reinforcement is effective in repairing certain types of simulated corrosion defects.
