Demonstration Applications in the Use of Dynamic Pile Monitoring

This report summarizes observations during three demonstrations of the use of thePile Driving Analyzer for dynamic monitoring of pile driving for two bridges in Pennsylvania. Friction H-piles and monotube piles were tested in Tioga County, and end-bearing H-piles were tested in Chester County. The capacity determinations by three static load tests were compared to results by static calculations, WEAP calculations, CASE calculations, and CAPWAP calculations for all piles tested. The dynamic monitoring equipment was also used to assess hammer performance, driving stresses, and pile damage. Dynamic evaluations were made at end of driving and beginning of redrive. Preliminary specifications were evaluated and revised, and recommended specifications for conducting dynamic pile monitoring are presented. The report concludes that dynamic pile monitoring is an effective tool that should be used to assist in proper installation and evaluation of piles.
