Application of Horizontal Drilling to Gas Formations. Final Report, September 1991-May 1993

The overall objective of the work performed by CER in this contract was to assist GRI in developing case histories and evaluating the potential for increased gas production and reserves through horizontal drilling and completion in gas reservoirs. More specifically, CER's objectives were to: (1) provide technical assistance in evaluating and selecting formations suitable for horizontal well completions; (2) assist other GRI contractors in designing the horizontal wells which would test the gas targets; (3) design and implement data acquisition programs for the horizontal wells and interpret such data; and (4) document and transfer significant research results to producers. In support of these objectives, data were collected and analyzed during 1991 and 1992 on vertical co-op wells in four gas productive formations: the Barnett Shale in north-central Texas, the Davis Sandstone in north-central Texas, the Mancos B interval in northwest Colorado, and the Clinton Sandstone in northeast Ohio.
