The report provides comprehensive guidelines for design, specification, and contracting of mechanically stabilized earth slopes. These guidelines were developed for use by transportation agencies. Both a material specification and a systems specification approach are addressed. A material specification approach is suited for in-house design by an agency, and the systems specification approach is suited to a 'line and grade' process, similar to that widely used with MSE wall structures. Slopes on firm foundations are specifically addressed, and embankments over soft soils are not covered. Use of geosynthetic reinforcement is included in the document, with geogrids and geotextiles specifically addressed. These guidelines are primarily based upon existing FHWA report on soil reinforcement. Specific reports and guidelines are cited in the text and listed as references.
