Environmental Characteristics of EPA, NRC, and DOE Sites Contaminated withRadioactive Substances

The U.S. EPA offices of Radiation and Indoor Air and Solid Waste and EmergencyResponse, the US Department of Energy Office of Environmental Restoration and Waste Management, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards initiated preliminary efforts to promote the more appropriate and consistent use of computer models in remediating sites contaminated by radioactive substances and managed by the participating federal agencies. As a baseline for these efforts, the nature and types of problems present at these sites must be understood. The report responds to this need. It presents in textual, tabular, and graphical formats: a list of the 45 EPA National Priorities List Superfund sites and the 38 NRC Site Decommissioning Management Plan sites containing radioactive waste materials, the types of waste found at each site, a description of the physical form of the waste, physical characteristics of the site, and demographic characteristics of the region surrounding the site.
