Geographic information system (GIS)-based analyses have been extremely useful tothe study of environmental resources, but these studies have depended on large quantities of data that are obtained with relative ease. There are no means for easily obtaining data on a large scale for water quality studies. This necessitates the use of discrete sampling programs to collect water quality data which result in point-data coverage rather than sets of polygons. It is necessary to convert the point data coverage into a surface that can be mapped with a GIS package. Kriging and cokriging are geostatistical interpolation techniques that allow the conversion of point data into a mappable surface. The purpose of the report is to identify a geostatistical approach to handling data from the entire Upper Mississippi River basin to produce basin-wide estimates of water quality parameters.
