DNA typing of variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) loci provides a powerfultool to the forensic scientist for discriminating among individuals. Once a DNA profile from an evidentiary sample has been determined to match that of suspect (or, depending on the scenario, a victim), it is desirable to convey the relative rarity of the DNA profile in the general population. While the ethnic background of the suspect is not germane to selecting a reverence database, the possible impact of different allele frequencies in subpopulations on statistical estimates has been a bit more elusive for a few courts. Therefore, VNTR population data generated by the forensic community using the restriction endonuclease Hae III or Hinf I have been compiled in the compendium so the forensic significance of subpopulations on statistical inferences from general population databases could be evaluated. Differences in statistical estimates were deemed forensically significant when the likelihood of occurrence of the DNA profile would be meaningfully different. Volume I-B contains 31 bin sorted frequency tables for each VNTR locus (Hae III) for each population source.
