Treatment of Domestic Wastewater by a Constructed Upland-Wetland WastewaterTreatment System

An Upland-Wetland wastewater treatment system was installed during September 1989to test its effectiveness in treatment of wastewater from a single family home. Treatment effectiveness is indicated by representative exit drain samples taken from March 1990 to September 1991 showing the following average concentrations (mg/L): total nitrogen (TN), 13.2; ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), < 0.1; nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), 11.7; phosphate phosphorus (PO4-P), 0.5; total phosphorus (TP), 0.5; chemical oxygen demand (COD), 34.0 and suspended solids (SS), 8.6. Pathogenic bacteria and viruses as indicated by fecal coliform colonies/100 ml of sample were taken from March 1990 to December 1991.
