Report of the Working Group to Revise the Model State Vital Statistics Act andRegulations

The national vital registration and statistics system is the result of acooperative effort between the states and the Federal Government. The states operate and control the system, as each develops its own forms and collects and publishes its own data. The Federal role is to collect and publish national data. The Model State Vital Statistics Act and Regulations serve as models for states in developing their own laws and regulations. The model law is designed to improve the quality and uniformity of state data by establishing standard reporting requirements, definitions, and procedures for registering vital events. To ensure that the model law meets the various needs for which it is designed, it is essential that it be reviewed and revised periodically. This summary presents an overview of the evaluation, commenting on the objectives, schedule/role of participants, and major decisions.
