Injury Mechanisms and Tolerance of the Human Ankle Joint

This research grant examined the human ankle joint tolerance and mechanism(s) ofinjury in axial loading of cadaver legs. The test methodology included two major components, a static load test phase and a dynamic impulse load test phase. For all 24 tests planned (12 static and 12 dynamic), the injuries were identified through careful dissection of the specimen. The extent and severity of these injuries were then correlated to specific test and subject parameters. These parameters included the applied load, relative bone strength (from Cameron Bone density measurements), results of tibia bending tests, height, weight, age and sex of the subject. The results of this analysis will be used to develop force/injury, displacement/injury relationships for both the static and dynamic loading tests. The mechanism of the injuries will also be identified and thoroughly analyzed.
