Deep wells for the exploration and production of oil and gas are drilled with a rotating rock-crushing tool, called a bit. The bit is driven by an electric motor at the surface, the torque being transmitted to the bit through a drillstring consisting mainly of slender tubes, whose diameter is smaller than that of the borehole. A brief overview of the drilling process and the field of drillstring dynamics is presented in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 treats aspects of the lateral vibrations of the lowest, stabilized part of the drillstring. Chapter 3 is concerned with torsional vibrations. Chapter 4 presents the theory behind a computer program for the simulation of the motion of a rotating drillstring.
