Design and Implementation Issues of End-to-End Protocols in High-Speed Networks

摘要

Optical transmission technology opens the way to design computer networks which offer bandwidth in the order of Gigabits/s to individual computers. Backed by the improvements of microprocessor technology, there are numerous applications that are ready to exploit the advantages of high-speed networks. The effects of this new networking environment on the design and implementation of communication protocols has become the subject of extensive research. The paper focuses on issues related to the design and implementation of end-to-end protocols because the upper layer protocols are identified by many researchers as a possible bottleneck in high-speed communication. A survey of the literature concerning the problem is given.
