The objective of the manual is to identify the various techniques for determining the in-situ maximum horizontal stress direction in a subsurface reservoir. The intent is to provide information on the technical basis of the techniques, methods of acquiring the data, methods of interpreting the data, application examples and relative cost information. The manual may be used as a guide to assist in planning a data acquisition program to evaluate hydraulic fracture azimuth. The report subdivides the various techniques for determining in-situ stress direction into four categories: (1) core-based techniques; (2) borehole-based techniques; (3) near-wellbore techniques associated with hydraulic fracture monitoring; and (4) regional geologic indicators of in situ stress. In addition, a list of references is provided for more detailed information concerning each is presented.
