Overview of Federal Food Safety Research Including Research Needs for the Future

The report describes the roles and responsibilities of the various Federalagencies dealing with food safety research and presents a snapshot of the research areas in which these agencies are involved. The report goes on to identify current areas of Federal research that will demand continued or increased emphasis in the future. Examples of these areas include the development of methods to detect microbiological pathogens in food and improved methods for risk assessment. The report also outlines some new or emerging food safety areas that will compel new approaches and a coordinated Federal research effort. Some of the areas are: recycling of food packaging, safer techniques for pest control, and biotechnologically-produced foods.
