Flight simulation models of the Cessna Citation 500 were composed using twodifferent approaches: DATCOM techniques and identification from flight test data. DATCOM techniques result in so-called a priori airplane models: cost effective alternatives to models identified from flight test data. Using a high accuracy flight test measurement system, an extensive flight test program was carried out to generate a data base for application of model identification techniques. Next, the quality of the DATCOM a priori models was compared to the models derived from flight tests. To this end part of the flight test program was used to execute flight test maneuvers for model validation. The quality of the models could be assessed by comparing a posteriori response predictions of these maneuvers to the measured responses. The comparison indicates that for this particular aircraft type acceptable models can be composed using DATCOM techniques. In extreme flight conditions, and for take off and landing where ground effect plays an important part, identification from flight test data is still the only solution.
