Typology for Executive Decision Making with Narrated Examples

In a series of 101 in-depth structured field interviews, U.S. Army GeneralOfficers at all ranks described decision making--their own and that of their peers. These descriptions ran a gamut. A seven-part typology was a major result of the effort to capture the decision making of military executives as portrayed in the interview data. The types of decision making identified in the typology are: authoritarian, participative, democratic, distributed-delegated, deputized, consensual, and collegial. This research utilizes a type of qualitative analysis which enabled identification of the typology of executive decision making.
