Hydraulic Properties of the Madison Aquifer System in the Western Rapid CityArea, South Dakota

The purpose of the report is to describe the hydraulic properties of the Madisonaquifer system determined from analysis of aquifer tests conducted at Rapid City in 1990 by the U.S. Geological Survey. The hydrogeology of the sites, design and methodology of the tests, and test results are discussed. In addition, the geologic framework and hydrogeologic properties at each of the test sites are described on the basis of qualitative and quantitative interpretation of geophysical well logs. Drawdown data were analyzed by appropriate analytical methods based on conceptual models of the Madison aquifer system at each of the aquifer test sites. The analysis of the aquifer tests provided information on the transmissivity and storage coefficient of the Minnelusa and Madison aquifers and on the vertical hydraulic conductivity and specific storage of the lower Minnelusa confining bed.
