Aquatic Weed Control within an Integrated Water Management Framework

A combined surface and groundwater flow model for analyzing the effects of weedcontrol was developed. The model was verified with field data on groundwater levels, discharges, moisture storage in the root zone, and evapotranspiration in the Hupselse Beek catchment. Weed control strategies were evaluated for a pilot area in the eastern part of the Netherlands. In a cost-benefit analysis the cost of weed control and the damages for pasture were considered. The multi-objective decision method ELECTRE II enabled ecological impact to be incorporated as well. The method identified weed control strategies that are most favorable for agriculture or nature conservation.
