The report contains clinical practice guidelines for detecting, evaluating, and treating high blood cholesterol in adult patients. It discusses classification of blood cholesterol, patient evaluation, dietary treatment, and drug treatment. It provides recommendations for special populations (e.g. patients with established coronary disease (CHD); patients at high risk for CHD; women; the elderly; and young adults; and patients with coexisting hypertension). Appendices located at the end of each section feature helpful tools for the clinician, e.g. dietary questionnaire to assess adherence to diet plans, sample Step I and Step II diet menus that include ethnic cuisines; patient instructions for taking nicotinic acid (niacin) and resin therapy to help improve adherence; a data chart of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol distribution in the US population by age, race/ethnicity, and gender; and a table of corresponding levels of lipids in mg/dl and mmol.L.
