Social Indicators Study of Alaskan Coastal Villages. 2. Research Methodology:Design, Sampling, Reliability, and Validity

In 1986, the Minerals Management Service awarded this contract to analyzecontemporary life in 30 Alaskan villages located among seven ANCSA Native regions from Kodiak Island to the North Slope. The MMS requested that special attention be paid to distinguishing differences among ANCSA regions, between Native and non-Native residents, between villages that possessed well-developed infrastructures and superstructures and those that did not, and between OCWS oil-related activities and other activities that might affect village or organizations and life within villages. The contract called for developing two separate Social Indicator systems that periodically can be used to monitor the social conditions of Alaska's rural communities.
