The Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) initiative is a major multinationalcooperative R&D program focused on improving the global competitiveness of manufacturing. In the early 1990s, over twenty IMS projects were initiated by Japan's Ministry of International trade and Industry (MITI); this translated document is a summarized version of the project research progress report. This report establishes standards for building manufacturing plants based on the IMS philosophy which aims to equalize wealth while maintaining the global ecological environment. These buildings should protect their surroundings, contribute to the local area, and not generate pollution. Factory designers of the future will need to take into consideration the total environment in which a new factory is built including the local neighborhood, societal factors, and ecological considerations.
