Standardized Test Battery for Lung and Respiratory Diseases for Use inEnvironmental Health Field Studies

A workshop was held in August 1992 to assist the Agency for Toxic Substances andDisease Registry (ATSDR) in developing a standardized test battery for respiratory and lung diseases. The University of Iowa College of Medicine cosponsored the workshop. Thirty-two experts, representing a broad range of disciplines, participated. Workshop participants decided that epidemiologic investigations of lung and respiratory diseases should be organized in a sequential, tiered structure. First tier study designs are cross-sectional screenings to document increased incidence of respiratory illness. Second tier studies investigate the validity of a hypothesis. Third tier tests contain highly specialized clinical testing.
