Assessing Risk Factors and Hospital Quality for CABG. Executive Summary and FinalReport

The objective of the study was to identify preoperative risk factorssignificantly associated with the occurrence of in-hospital mortality and perioperative complications of isolated coronary artery bypass (CABG) surgery, and to compare the assessment of hospital outcomes based on risk-adjusted mortality. The study included all 30 hospitals that performed CABG surgery and all 14,944 patients who underwent isolated CABG surgery in New York in 1991. It concluded that risk-adjusted occurrence of complications of isolated CABG surgery appears to be an outcome that is independent of risk-adjusted mortality. Also, since perioperative complications are not as easily predicted based on preoperative severity of illness, they may be good markers of differences in quality of care.
