SRI International has completed the first research phase of a project whoseobjective is to prove the feasibility of an yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ)-based differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) NOx sensor that has sufficient sensitivity and selectivity for natural gas combustion processes. This phase emphasized the selectivity and resolution in monitoring low NOx concentration in the presence of O2 using the DPV technique. The authors demonstrated that DVP with gold (Au) electrocatalyst discriminates between the NO and O2 reductions and that the NO measurement is not affected by varying the O2 pressure from 0.5% to 5.0%. Using the same catalyst, cyclic voltammetry (CV) did not produce any characteristic peak associated with O2 or NO. They believe that by further optimizing the DPV parameters and selecting a better electrocatalyst, it is feasible to measure a few parts per million of NO in the presence of O2.
