Palmerton, Pennsylvania, is a town with cadmium, lead, and zinc contaminationresulting from zinc smelting activities dating from the turn of the century. The Pennsylvania Department of Health, with technical assistance from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, conducted an exposure study in 1991 to determine whether residents in the target area of Palmerton had been exposed to excess amounts of cadmium and lead. A total of 504 randomly selected residents, from 6 months through 75 years of age, participated (280 from the target area of Palmerton and 224 from a comparison community).
