Effects of Jet Strength on NOx Formation in Premixed Impinging Jet Combustionwith Minimum Heat Losses

NOx formation in the turbulent combustion of premixed methane/air mixtures in animpinging jet combustor with minimum heat losses was investigated. Experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure and an inlet temperature of 323K. Equivalence ratios ranged form .05 to 1.0 while mass loadings of the combustor ranged from 1.23 to 4.94 kg/cu ms, where the mass loading is defined as the mass flow rate of mixture per combustor volume. Impingement of jets of the mixtures produced a turbulent flow field in a spherical ceramic shell placed in a cubic ceramic chamber for minimizing heat losses from the combustion field to the ambient. The NOx formation rates were predicted using the Zeldovich mechanism and were compared with the measurements.
