摘要

The Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) initiative is a major multinationalcooperative R&D program focused on improving the global competitiveness of manufacturing. In the early 1990s, over twenty IMS projects were intitiated by Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI); this translated document is a summarized version of the project research progress report. This report aims at the improvement of machine processes and reliability most particularly in maintaining optimal machining for cutting and grinding processes which are typical in machining. These technologies are extremely important in realizing an intelligent production system. These systems with highly autonomic monitoring systems are in demand as the replacement of skilled workers. These systems also use clean technology, low percentage of defective parts, and high speed processing. (Copyright (c) 1993 National Center for Manufacturing Sciences.)
