The Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) initiative is a major multinationalcooperative R&D program focused on improving the global competitiveness of manufacturing. In the early 1990s, over twenty IMS projects were initiated by Japan's Ministry of International trade and Industry (MITI); this translated document is a summarized version of the project research progress report. This report examines the research and development of machining engineering with regards to next generation manufacturing at both the basic element and cell level. The High Function Autonomic Die Machining Module represents the core or the next generation production system. This machining module contains three major factors: issues concerning the environment, issues concerning techno-globalism, and issue concerning worker skills and concerns.
