PennDOT/MAUTC Partnership Project Task 16: Evaluation of Issues in Planning andDesign of Bicycle Trail-Highway Crossing

The purpose of this research project was to investigate engineering and planningissues related to trail-highway crossings and to provide the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) with recommendations on how to plan and design for safe operations at a trail-highway crossing. This report recommends a more proactive future role based on the premise that: (1) users of rail/trails are customers of PennDOT (at least at those points where rail/trails cross state-owned highways), and (2) abandoned rail lines represent valuable economic and social resources due to their potential for a variety of future transportation uses.
