Breastfeeding Promotion: A State-Based Initiative to Increase the Incidence andDuration of Breastfeeding

The breastfeeding promotion project in Illinois addresses the downward trend inState breastfeeding incidence by: (1) Training mothers enrolled in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to become breastfeeding peer counselors and placing the trained counselors in WIC and MCH clinics; (2) training WIC and MCH staff in breastfeeding promotion and management; (3) developing a breastfeeding promotion education model for use in the high schools; (4) promoting a model hospital breastfeeding policy throughout the State; and (5) improving the breastfeeding data collection system through protocol development. Breastfeeding rates will be assessed based on the Centers for Disease Control's pediatric nutrition surveillance data and the Electronic Perinatal Reporting Systems.
