Atlas of Seabirds in the Southern North Sea

This atlas is meant to compile the results of ship-based surveys conducted since1987 in the Dutch sector of the southern North Sea. Only data were used of surveys in which methods as proposed by Tasker et al. 1984 were adopted. Results of surveys organized onboard RV 'Holland,' data of cruises organized by the Netherland Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) and the Institute for Forestry and Native Research (IBN-DLO) during 1987-93 were combined. Added were data collected by others during 1985-93 within the study area, as available in the European Seabirds at Sea Database (ESAS) database. With this atlas, base-line data are provided which can be compared to results obtained by aerial surveys. In order to put the results in a broader context, we made a comparison with seawatching results and strandings data, in an attempt to achieve a more complete review of the status of seabirds in Dutch North Sea waters throughout the year.
