Phillipine's Fisheries Industry, 1993: An Overview

The fishing industry accounted for about 3.7 percent of the Philippine's GNP in1992, employing almost one million fishermen and fishfarmers. The Bureau of Agriculture Statistics estimates 1992 industry production at 2.63 million metric tons, a 1 percent increase over 1991. Commercial fishing beyond the 15 km limit and aquaculture production were sources of industry growth while coastal fisheries production fell by 5.4 percent as a result of overfishing and poor management. Future decline in coastal fisheries is expected because no effective corrective measures are being taken. Growth is high in commercial tuna fishing and prawn aquaculture.
