In response to a request from management, an investigation was begun intoexposures from coolants used in the Hot Line Department at Kaiser Aluminum, Trentwood Works (SIC-3355), Spokane, Washington. The facility was engaged in the production of aluminum sheet and plate. There were about 150 workers employed in the Hot Line Department. A walk through survey, employee interviews, and a medical and industrial hygiene survey were conducted. Eleven employees who had experienced acute, work related respiratory effects were identified. The authors conclude that workers were exposed to coolant mist which contained substances known to cause acute respiratory effects and pulmonary impairment, and irritant or allergic dermatitis. The authors recommend that exposure to coolant mists be reduced.
