National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Report of the Task Force on Research inCardiopulmonary Dysfunction in Critical Care Medicine

In 1993, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute convened this Task Forceon Research in Cardiopulmonary Dysfunction in Critical Care Medicine, comprising national experts in basic clinical, and population-based research. The task force was charged with assessing the current state of research accomplishments in cardiopulmonary dynsfunction in adults in the critical care environment and with recommending future approaches that would lead to improved understanding of the pathophysiology of critical illness, better management of critically ill patients, and improved health care. The findings of the task force are described in three major sections of this report: basic research, clinical research, and epidemiology research. Research accomplishments, opportunities, and recommendations for the future are summarized.
