This guideline addresses quality issues concerning mammography, the primary toolfor the early detection of breast cancer. Information is presented that is pertinent to each health professional and to the woman having mammography. Several steps are involved in mammography, including referral for mammography, performing the mammography, and communicating results in a timely manner. The panel considered the many links in the chain of events that comprise mammography, identified where problems exist, and addressed these problems with specific guideline statements.
