Evaluation of Edge Drains Headwalls and Outlets on Western Kentucky Parkway andPennyrile Parkway

Longitudinal, round, perforated pipe edge drains have been used along Kentuckyroadways for approximately two decades. Most of these edge drains were installed on the Interstate and Parkway systems. Several problems related to the drains have been noted in the last seven years. A number of these problems have been observed to be related to flexible outlet pipes and headwalls. In 1989, the single wall flexible polyethylene outlet pipe was replaced by double wall polyethylene pipe. The report documents findings of the investigation of 413 edge drain outlets on the Western Kentucky Parkway and Pennyrile Parkway. Of the 413 outlets investigated, approximately 74 outlets were not installed properly or were damaged during construction. A majority of the outlets inspected had single
