The Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) initiative is a major multinationalcooperative R&D program focused on improving the global competitiveness of manufacturing. In the early 1990s, over twenty IMS projects were initiated by Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI); this translated document is a summarized version of the project research progress report. This report discusses the planning and managemnet of the next generation production system as it relates to the environment, supply, production, selling, and the flow of products. In this report, autonomy implies harmonious behaviors that accommodate environmental factors against external turbulence under specific time and conditions. Harmonious integration is the consolidation of a system through collaboration as to bear a unified value while harmonizing diversified systems and various values as a whole. Growth is the mechanism of evolution and modification of the system itself in accordance with the chronological changes in the environment for the purposes of adaption and evolution. The preparation and systematization of administrative and managerial aspects corresponding to the three concepts above become essential.
