A key component in the delivery of health care to the population is theavailability of an appropriate supply of health care providers. Registered nurses are the largest group of health care providers. They function throughout the health care delivery system with a variety of responsibilities and roles. Periodic surveys are carried out to assess the number and characteristics of the registered nurse population and to assist in the evaluation of trends in the availability of nursing resources. This report summarizes the fifth in a seris of such studies. The data for these studies are collected from registered nurses through the means of a mail questionnaire to a sample of individuals with current licenses to practice as registered nurses at the time of the study.
