The Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) initiative is a major multinationalcooperative R&D program focused on improving the global competitiveness of manufacturing. In the early 1990s, over twenty IMS projects were initiated by Japan's Ministry of International trade and Industry (MITI); this translated document is a summarized version of the project research progress report. The relationship between quality engineering and individual technology and applying it for advanced technologies is discussed. Quality engineering is transformed to a form or software through the collaboration of system engineers and is utilized for specialized manufacturing applications. This software includes individual knowledge databases that are tailored into an advanced system software that will eventually help establish a new production system software in correspondence to CIM (Corporate Information Manager) models.
