The results of an experimental and numerical investigation on the fatiguebehavior of uniplanar and multiplanar joints made of square hollow sections are presented in this work. This work has been carried out within the framework of the research program DCT80-1457 sponsored by the Netherlands Technical Foundation (STW). After calibration of the numerical models of the joints with the experimental results, a numerical investigation for the joint parameters for the determination of stress concentration factors (SCFs) and strain concentration factors (SNCFs) was conducted. The software 'HOTSHS' is developed which uses the data base of this parameter study to calculate the hot spot stresses at the weld toes in the various joint types investigated for a given load combination, within the range of the parameters studied. The aim of this research program is to provide stress concentration factors for the fatigue design of uniplanar and multiplanar joints in square hollow sections.
