Assessment of Traffic Control Schemes in ATM Networks

In Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks, reservation-oriented traffic needsto be monitored to enforce the reservation contract at the time of reservation connection. Cell loss ratio according to the Generic Cell Rate Algorithm (GCRA) is studied as the algorithm is used to discard cells exceeding the reservation contract. For reservationless traffic, feedback control algorithms are studied, which attempt to adjust the cell emission rates according to the congestion level in the network. Two such schemes are briefly described. Qualitative assessments of control algorithms are also provided.
