The objective of this study was to obtain information on the number of registerednurses who are currently nationally certified or state recognized as nurse practitioners (NPs) and the number of nurses who are currently nationally certified or state recognized as certified nurse specialists (CNSs) through a process that requires the master's degree in nursing. In addition, the following data were sought about the two groups: their sociodemographic and educational characteristics, their employment status, their distribution by specialty, their geographic distribution by location of practice, their distribution by employment setting, the characteristics of their practice/employment setting, the sociodemographic characteristics of the populations they serve, the range of clinical conditions in the populations for which they provide care, and their scope of practice with respect to the delineation of functions in the practice setting and the degree of autonomy in decision making.
